Illegal constructions thriving in Alwal

Alwal: Residents of Alwal, who found out that a number of storeys were being constructed without proper permission and were flouting norms, approached the local authorities to complain. They alleged that GHMC officials failed to take action against illegal constructions.

As per norms, though only three-storeyed constructions are allowed on plots with an area less than or equal to 300 sq yards, unidentified persons are building 4 to 5.5 storeyed complex, while flouting regulations. Illegal constructions are mushrooming in Madhura Enclave- Macha Bolarum, Presidency Colony- Temple Alwal and in FTL near Chinna Rayavuni Lake, Alwal.

"We have lodged numerous complaints against illegal constructions with GHMC officials, but no action has been taken so far. If these structures come up then limited civic resources like electricity, drinking water pipeline will be under severe strain to meet the demand. It can also result in damage to drainage system and roads," said Srinivas Verma , general secretary, Greater Alwal Allied Service Association (GAASA).

Last year, a group of unidentified people has also attempted to construct an illegal structure near the lake, but they were stopped by GHMC. But they resumed building the structure last month again. Many times the residents here have complained to GHMC, but till now no action has been taken.

"Construction materials are dumped on the pavement, especially during evening hours, causing problems to the locals. It is becoming difficult for us to ply our vehicles. Only three-storeyed constructions are allowed on plots with an area less than or equal to 300 yards. But in the Temple Alwal area, an unidentified person is building 5 1/2 storeyed complex which is illegal. Many times, we have given complaints to GHMC regarding illegal construction.

Even knowing about illegal construction, why the concerned officials are not taking any action?" said G Praveen, a resident of Temple Alwal.

Officials have clarified that they are making sure that such illegal constructions are under check and regular notices are being sent. "We have received several complaints regarding illegal constructions in Alwal. Whenever we get such complaints a legal notice is sent and then stern action is taken," said Sridhar Goud, Assistant City Planner Officer, GHMC Town Planning Wing.
