Hyderabad: TS to launch Census 2021 soon

Update: 2020-02-13 01:34 IST

Hyderabad: The Telangana government has decided to carry out Census 2021 ignoring Centre's decision to implement the National Population Register (NPR) from April 1. It has accordingly issued a notification to take up the census work.

Officials said Chief Minister K Chandrashekar Rao has asked the officials concerned to put on hold the implementation of the NPR until further instructions from the CMO (Chief Minister's Office).

Chief Secretary Somesh Kumar issued the notification for Census 2021 which has been forwarded to all the Secretaries and District Collectors to make necessary arrangements and complete the task before September 30 deadline. As per the orders, the enumerators will collect the details of the ownership of the house, condition of the house, access to drinking water and toilets, availability of LPG connections, TV, Radio, access to internet, telephone, mobile and computer.

The objective of the census is to compile the data of each household and not the details of the individuals. Under the NPR, the government will have to compile the data of each individual mainly his place of birth and details of his ancestors."

In the census data, the personal details will not be included in the list of the items in the enumeration," a senior official said.

It may be recalled that KCR has been opposing the CAA (Citizenship Amendment Act) and raised strong doubts about the implementation of the NPR and the preparation of NRC (National Register of Citizen).

Officials said that the CM will hold a Cabinet meeting and adopt a resolution against the NPR before the beginning of the budget session in February. The Chief Minister is also likely to make an official statement on the CAA in the Assembly and send a resolution to the Centre against the NPR and NRC.
