In order to create awareness on traffic rules and to keep a check on road accidents in and around the city, training classes will be conducted for auto drivers in Vijayawada city.

The Andhra Pradesh Lorry Owners Association in association with Voluntary Health and Education and Economic Development Unit (VEEDU) and Ramcor are conducting the training classes for 10 days at the Ramcor showroom in Chuttugunta.

The autorikshaw drivers will be given a certificate with the title “I am a Safe Driver” post the training. More than 20,000 autos are in the city providing livelihood to over 50,000 drivers.

The Lorry Owners Association has decided to impart training to the auto drivers since they play a vital role in public transportation in the city. In the first phase, the organisers decided to impart training to 250 auto drivers and started the classes on Wednesday at Ramcor conference hall.

Incharge deputy transport commissioner M Purendra, assistant commissioner of police (traffic) S Sravan Kumar, AP Lorry Owners Association general secretary Y V Eswara Rao, Ramco managing director KVS Prakasha Rao, Veedu executive director M Vasu and attended the inauguration programme.

The transport department is giving out pamphlets on traffic rules to the drivers. Motor vehicle inspectors and traffic police explain the traffic and road safety rules. M Purendra addressing on the occasion said the department would give all kinds of assistance to the auto drivers.

Insurance facility of Rs 1 lakh will be provided, certificate and one pair of uniform will be given to the auto driver for attending the class, said Ramcor managing director K V Prakasa Rao. Veedu executive director M Vasu said efforts were on to conduct more training classes to the auto drivers in the city.

He said number of visitors increasing to the city and the CRDA region. He said people from not only other states, but other countries will visit the city in coming years and auto drivers should be given training to increase communication skills and giving respect to the visitors.
