Pithapuram (East Godavari): It is a dwarf variety red chilli, which is fetching good returns to farmers of Gollaprolu mandal. The chilli variety which resembles a cherry fruit, is very hot.

  • The variety has great demand in Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and other States

The variety has great demand in Maharashtra where it is called `Bare Chilli’. The chilli crop is being raised in about 1,000 acres in Durgada, Chendurthi, Tatiparthi and Chebrolu villages of the mandal exclusively for export.

It is not used for local consumption. The crop is grown under borewells in upland villages. It needs an investment of Rs 20,000 to Rs 30,000 per acre. On an average, the crop yield is 70 bags per acre. Its price ranges from Rs 240 to Rs 300 per kg in the market.

The chilli variety is mainly exported to Maharashtra, Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Delhi and other States. Normally, traders from Mumbai buy the chilli variety at the ripening stage itself by paying advances to farmers.

In some cases, green chilli is also exported. After harvesting the crop, the produce is dried in the fields. Later, the red chilli is specially packed to ensure that it does not damage during transportation. According to an estimate, more than 40 tonnes of the dwarf variety red chilli is exported from the mandal.

Speaking to The Hans India, a chilli farmer said, “We are cultivating the locally developed seed variety for quite a long time. The dwarf variety chilli has proved to be a boon to many farmers in the mandal. The chilli variety has brought a nation-wide recognition for Gollaprolu.”
