Rajamahendravaram: Tobacco auction started on a positive note at auction centre in Thorredu on Thursday. One kilogram of tobacco has received Rs. 161 and this is an affordable price than comparing to last year. The last year auction has begun with Rs 99, whereas this year started with Rs 161 per one kilogram.
It is good news for farmers who are waiting for the remunerative prices. It may be recalled that 247 farmers did not cultivate tobacco disappointed by the price they have received in last year. Farmers expecting Rs 170 per one kilogram this year and tobacco companies have started purchasing by paying from Rs 143 to Rs 162 this year.
Auction centre has become busy from the morning as the representatives of tobacco companies and farmers with tobacco bales started arriving from the morning. Farmers from Kovvur, Devarapalli, Polavaram and Gopalpuram mandals in West Godavari and farmers from Devipatnam, Rangampeta, Gandepalli, Sithanagaram, Korukonda, Gokavaram and Peddapuram mandals in East Godavari have reached the auction centre along with tobacco bales.
Farmers from Raghudevapuram in Sithanagaram mandals have come with 18 bales in which 16 bales have been sold. Companies like ITC, BVI, JTR, TSS and Venus have participated in the auction.The representatives of companies have inspected the quality of tobacco bales before taking part in the auction. The farmers have received Rs 154 per one kilogram on average on the first day of the auction.
It is estimated that the cultivation area will grow next year of the price increases this year. Most of the farmers are in hurry to sell their tobacco in the auction which will continue till 10th of this month. Some of the farmers came to the auction centre just to examine the price as prices are down in the last year. The purchases will increase as it is estimated that more farmers will arrive at the auction centre from Friday as the prices are good.
