Hyderabad: The High Court at Hyderabad has dismissed the petitions filed by YSRCP president Y S Jaganmohan Reddy seeking exemption from personal appearance in the CBI court hearings every Friday and asserted that it is the discretion of the lower court to grant such exemption to an accused or not. The High Court directed Jagan to approach the lower court giving reasons why exemption should be granted.

The CBI Court had earlier rejected the plea of Jagan seeking exemption from personal appearance on the ground that he has to fulfil his duties as elected representative and have to move among people. Challenging this rejection, Jagan had filed petitions in the High Court and these were dismissed by a common order by Justice M Satyanarayana Murthy on Thursday.

The cases against YSRCP president are of serious economic crimes to the tune of thousands of crores of rupees, and as per Criminal Procedure Code also, it is the discretion of the Magistrate to grant exemption or not in such cases, the order noted. It also quoted the Supreme Court remark that the economic crimes related to Jagan cases could severely impact the nation’s economy also. In such serious crimes, usually the Magistrate does not use his discretion.
