Lemon prices soar with hoarding by traders
A kilogram of raw mangoes are being sold at Rs 10-15 in the local vegetable market and cost of a kg lemon is around Rs 50-60 due to artificial scarcity created by traders. So, consumers are preferring only raw mangoes instead of lemon for recipes and other purposes.

In fact, lemon is cultivated in a total of 45,000 acres in Podalakur, Turimerla, Gollapalli, Tippavarappadu, Sydapuram, Chaganam, Rapur, Utukuru, Degapudi, Tatiparthi, Mittaatmakuru, Marlapudi, Chalamcherla, Thalupuru, Pagadalapalli and many villages across the district. Nellore is suitable for acid lime as the district lies in an area of precarious and uncertain rainfall and the climate of the district is generally dry and salubrious.
Farmers export the crop from Podalakur and Gudur lemon markets to Karnataka, Kerala, Delhi and also to other parts of the country during peak season. Kagzi lime and Indore seedling Baramasi are primarily grown in district for good yielding. Normally, April, May and June are the hottest months with maximum temperatures and these conditions are suitable for the crop. The normal rainfall of the district is 1,080.5 mm.
“Lemon was having good demand till March this year and now raw mango is available in the market as an alternative to the consumers for recipes. Besides, crop is also available from other parts of Telangana and hence we lose demand as soon as May arrives. In Gudur market also, there is a slump,” said Koduru Meera Reddy, a lemon exporter from Gudur.
Interestingly, mango crop was delayed by one month due to climatic changes and stocks are available in the market. So, raw mango is also available for convenience of the consumers. This has also been impacting sales of lemon in towns where traders are exploiting consumers with huge prices.
“Traders in local ACSR market are exploiting the consumers with huge costs. They are selling 3 big lemons for Rs 10 that comes to around Rs 50-60 a kilogram. We came to know that traders are purchasing lemon for lesser price from farmers. So, we are preferring raw mangoes till price of lemon comes down,” said T Padmavathi, a housewife.
