Visakhapatnam: The city was in a celebration mode as several organisations, institutions and voluntary associations came together to mark the International Women’s Day on Friday.

Interactive sessions, health camps and awareness programmes on nutrition marked the celebrations at the Waltair Railway Division. About 32 women employees engaged in track maintenance, checking, among other jobs were honoured as a token of recognition for their remarkable contribution to the Indian Railways. Additional Divisional Regional Manager of the Waltair Division, East Coast Railway, Akshay Saxena presented cash awards to women employees.

Underlining the importance of gender equality, RINL celebrated the day by organising a programme. RINL CMD P K Rath attended as chief guest at the programme. Women employees took part in cultural programmes held on the occasion.

HPCL-Visakh Refinery joined the celebrations by honouring its women employees. A lecture by the Brahmakumaris team was arranged for the participants.

Students of Gayatri Vidya Parishad MLB Trust School took part in the celebrations held at school. Author K Santhi, who attended as special guest, briefed on her book ‘Anger without Life’.

Cultural programmes and lectures marked the celebrations at the Department of Psychology, Andhra University. Speaking on the occasion, Andhra University Vice-Chancellor Prof G Nageswara Rao said that it was the responsibility of everyone to encourage women, who were equally progressing in all walks of life.

Registrar of Andhra University, Prof K Niranjan said, “Women of this generation are good at multi-tasking because they not only take care of their families but also strive for welfare of their organisation and society at large.” Dean of Academic Affairs, Andhra University, M V R Raju, HoD, Psychology and students of Psychology were present on the occasion.

Some of the institutions also organised rally to create awareness on gender equality. Many self-help group women made their way to District Public Library to take part in the International Women’s Day celebrations hosted by Dhan Foundation. Its regional coordinator K Rama Prabha encouraged the women to be self-reliant and consider ways and be financially independent by setting up small scale units, availing the subsidies.

Taking the service route, Sri Sathya Sai Seva organisation quenched the thirst of those who visited the District Court on Friday by serving buttermilk in glasses to mark the International Women’s Day. Close to 50 volunteers from various wings of the organisation distributed over 30,000 glasses of buttermilk to people. The organisation’s district women service wing coordinator Ammaji, among others took part in the programme.
