Visakhapatnam: The first phase of urban waste to energy and power generation from garbage are going in full swing and the civil works are expected to be completed by April-end. Greater Visakhapatnam Municipal Corporation (GVMC) and Jindal Urban Waste to Energy Project management are jointly establishing the 15 MW power plant with urban waste as the raw material.

The GVMC will supply the garbage to the project and also gave its site to ensure 100th cleanest city. As per the MoU with the GVMC, the Jindal is investing Rs 280 crore and establishing the power plant.

At an average, the GVMC is collecting 950 to 1,000 MTs of garbage and disposal of garbage has become a herculean task to the corporation. In order to clear the garbage on daily basis, the GVMC is supporting the project by giving its land of 18 acres to establish the power plant.

According to the plan, not only power generation, the plant will also make tiles and bricks from the waste. According to the Jindal Urban Waste to Energy project officials, 50 per cent of the civil works were completed and in the coming two months, the entire civil works would be completed. The technical and machinery erection works would be started from May onwards, they said.

GVMC Commissioner M Hari Narayanan on every week is monitoring the project works and directing the project officials to speed up the works. “According to the MoU with the project management, the GVMC will supply 1,000 MTs of urban waste every day.

The GVMC is not investing single rupee in the project. The main advantage of the project is the garbage what the GVMC is collecting will be disposed on daily basis,” said Chief Medical Officer of GVMC Dr A Hemanth.
