The three-day Sri Sathya Sai International Orthopaedic Conference-2015 on “Iliarov- Evolution and Applications” organized by the department of Orthoapaedics of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram concluded here on Sunday.
The three-day Sri Sathya Sai International Orthopaedic Conference-2015 on “Iliarov- Evolution and Applications” organized by the department of Orthoapaedics of the Sri Sathya Sai Institute of Higher Medical Sciences, Prasanthigram concluded here on Sunday.
The three day conference focused on the the Ilizarov technique of orthopedic treatment, which uses a type of external fixation to lengthen or reshape limb bones; to treat complex and/or open bone fractures; and in some cases of infected non-unions of bones. It is named after the orthopedic surgeon Gavriil Abramovich Ilizarov from Russia who pioneered the technique.
The conference had a range of topics on the Ilizarov technique, which was for the benefit of the beginners as well as to the advanced practitioners of the technique. The conference had a galaxy of Ilizarov experts from across the world. The highlights of the conference were hands-on workshop and live surgical demonstrations.
Talking about the conference Dr. Milind Chaudhary, the pioneer of Ilizarov in India said that there was a great depth in the faculty and the conference covered extensive dimensions regarding the Ilizarov technique. “I think this is one of the best conferences I have ever attended, there was the hands on workshop the live surgeries". Regarding the concept of free health care being provided by the Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, Dr. Chaudhary said that the kind of work being done by the hospitals of Bhagawan Baba was unbelievable. “Especially from the perspective of Ilizarov I can say that it requires extended care over a period of time which can be easily done here,” he added.
Speaking about the conference Dr. Alexander Gubin, Director of the Russian Ilizarov Scientific Centre for Restorative Tramatology and Orthopaedics mentioned that the conference was a wonderful platform for learning. “The content of the conference is of high quality and covered the whole range of topics regarding the Ilizarov technique, It was wonderful”, he said. When asked about the concept of free healthcare as provided by the hospitals set up by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, Dr. Gubin said that it was an amazing concept and this model of healthcare needed to be popularized across the world.
Dr. Alexander Kireinko and expert in Ilizarov technique from Milan, Italy, expressing his opinion about the conference said that the high quality content of the conference would help the practitioners of the technique in a big way. “Just lectures are not enough for learning, it has to be practically demonstrated. This conference, therefore, had the hands-on workshop and live surgical demonstrations that would go a long way went a long way in making the delegates understand the nuances of the technique,” Dr. Kiernko said. Regarding the concept of free health care as delivered by the healthcare institutions set up by Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba, Dr. Kierenko said that , “it was simply magic”. “ One can only imagine something like this in his or her dream, but it is happening here,” he said.
A delegate Dr. R.B. Uppin, Prof of Orthopaedics from Belgaum, Karnataka, said that the highlight of the conference was that it covered topics right from the basic to the advanced methods of treatment through the Ilizarov technique. “The conference here had four live surgeries, which helped the delegates to learn the techniques in a better way, he added. Talking about the hospital, Dr. Uppin said that the hospital it was spirituality, healthcare and academics all in one. “ The doctors and surgeons in this hospital are providing care without any expectations and the best part of the healthcare provided here is the fact that there is no billing at all in the hospital,” he said.
A delegate at the conference, Dr. Anish M Rao from Valsad, Gujarat said that the conference was an excellent platform for the beginners to learn the technique of Ilizarov. “ I have attended several conferences, but they had mainly lectures, but here we had hands on training, which will help us develop the skills required for Ilizarov. “ And this is the first time that I have seen top experts of Ilizarov from India and abroad at one conference, it was a delight,” he said.
