Kolkata-based artist Tapati Chowdhury’s experiments with art forms like drawing, painting and installations are quite well-known.

The artist is currently in the city showcasing her collection at Ailamma Art Gallery in Baghlingampally.

Speaking to the CityTab about her love for art, Tapati says, “I had interest in art from my childhood. My work is an amalgamation of real and imaginary.”

“It is difficult to define where reality takes hold and where imagination takes off. Primarily some incident or visual has to strike me.

Then it becomes a subject of my work. The perceived subject gets twisted in my mind, in my articulation by typical handling of the medium. Medium gives a particular shape to the art work,” says the artist.

“I try to see happy and sad moments of humans through my art. I always depict emotions of people. Most of my works explains the things which annoy people.”

“In this exhibition I’m showcasing lucy in the sky, dancing dark, hanging dusk, lady with a crack of smile, partners in crime, grass bed, hide square, window blues and painting on saris. All these are made based on reality,” she shares.

Speaking about her participation in an art show in Denmark, she recalls, “It was like a travel type of thing. A total of ten artistes from different countries were invited for the show.

Earlier I went to Denmark and I showcased my works there and that was the reason they invited me for that art show. I installed many art works on saris in the show.”

“Art is important for people and it helps to explain emotions. Every artist must have a unique style in portraying their works. Taking inspiration from real life also helps getting good results. Ambiance is the key for every artist to make better paintings,” she concludes.
