Warangal: The Union government has been contemplating to bring out a ‘Sport Act’ to fill up missing gaps existing in the field of sports and games in the country, informed Nehru Yuva Kendra Sangathan national vice-chairman P Sekhar Rao.

The ministry concerned and officials were engaged in the process drafting the bill and soon it would be introduced in the parliament. There has been lot of politics involved in sports federations, which remained divided due to gaps and internal groups in the sporting bodies, he said.

The act would help to curtail such divisions and groups to create positive and congenial environment for sports and games to flourish to promote sporting talent in the country, Shekar Rao pointed out.

He addressed a gathering at the inaugural of international conference on ‘Physical Education, Sports and Fitness’ at Kakatiya Medical College (KMC) on Friday. Speaking to presspersons on the sidelines of the conference, he said the Centre has been serious and committed efforts to make India a sporting hub in the world in the days to come.

As part of such efforts, an All India Council for Sports was set up under the chairmanship of sports personality Prof Vijay Kumar Malhotra. The council was meant to achieve an effective coordination among different sporting bodies in the county.

Similarly the Centre has been providing required facilities to select top seed players engaged in different sports and games. The players were being provided expert coaching, dieting, training along with financial assistance to take part in tournaments, Shekar Rao explained.

Under Khelo India initiative, measures were being taken to develop infrastructure like indoor and outdoor stadiums, swimming pools at district headquarters and block headquarters. In addition to that it was decided to develop sports in every state in consultation with state governments.

The Centre would accept and try to implement the suggestions of the conference to possible extent, he added while expressing pleasure at conducting the conference in Warangal.

He hoped that Telangana would also emerge as a centre for sporting activity in the country and acknowledged the state government’s efforts in that direction.

Nearly 500 physical education students and delegates from across around 25 nations were taking part in the three-day event. Dronacharya awardee Nagapuri Ramesh was felicitated on the occasion.

The KMC Principal H Sandhya Rani, the event organising secretary T Prabhakar Reddy, Association of Orthopeadic Surgeons, south India, secretary general P Vijaychander Reddy and others were present.
