Warangal: GWMC, in association with Hare Krishna Foundation’s Akshaya Patra has on Friday launched Rs 5 per meal programme (Annapurna) at eight centres in the city for the benefit of the poor. Speaking on the occasion, he said large numbers of people from villages come to Warangal every day. Some come here seeking work while some visit the hospitals and other tasks. The food stalls were being placed at labour addas, markets, hospitals and others for the convenience of poor.

A healthy meal@Rs 5 would be of great help to them. The programme has already been implemented in Hyderabad. The government wanted to introduce it here and asked Hare Krishna Foundation’s help and they readily agreed, he explained.

GWMC Mayor N Narender informed that the Corporation would be bearing Rs 19.50 per plate meal while Hare Krishna Foundation would be taking care of the transport and cooking the food. He expressed gratitude to General Insurance Company for donating Rs 7 crore towards construction of the kitchen.

As part of the Rs 5 meal programme, it was aimed to feed about 5,000 people per day. In the days to come 50,000 people per day would be fed, the Mayor said while District Collector Amrapali Kata said the number of stalls would be increased gradually.

Later, all the VIPs had meals at the newly inaugurated food stall. MLAs Konda Surekha and Aroori Ramesh, MLCs Konda Muralidhar Rao and P Rajeshwar Reddy, commissioner of police G Sudheer Babu, district collector Amrapali Kata, municipal commissioner Shruti Ojha and others were present. On the occasion the Deputy CM has unveiled a logo of the GWMC.
