Hyderabad: The Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) on Wednesday deputed 21 special officers to collect property tax from defaulters in the city limits. Every officer has been assigned 1,000 defaulters. GHMC Commissioner B Janardhan Reddy said that in order to avoid funds shortage in providing civic amenities, the Corporation has decided to generate revenue from property tax defaulters, who have been evading it for many years.

The officers will be provided with the details of the defaulters who will either contact them in person or over phone on a daily basis to collect the tax. This method is proving to be very effective and the civic body has already collected about Rs 2.78 crore from Telangana police eighth battalion in Kondapur.

Janardhan Reddy further stated that he has asked the officials to concentrate more on private properties since the civic body is yet to collect Rs 518 crore from 3,829 properties as tax. In spite of participating in various other activities like dustbin distribution, election duty, road repairing works and construction of double bed room houses, the civic staff should not neglect the property tax collection, he added.
