Hyderabad: The swine flu virus remains in the spotlight for a few months before fading into oblivion as the summer sets in, but this year it has not. Unusually, the number of swine flu cases is increasing even during the summer months making the medical fraternity sit up and take notice.

Samples are sent to National Institute of Virology in Pune to find out whether the virus has undergone mutation

As a result, the Health Department decided to send samples to the National Institute of Virology (NIV) in Pune to find out if the virus underwent mutation. NIMS director, Dr K Manohar, said, “In Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tamil Nadu and Telangana State there have been many swine flu cases even during summer months. Four samples were sent to NIV last week and more would be sent for a genetic study.”

Since January to April 10, Kerala recorded 262 cases, Maharashtra 521, Karnataka 1,813, Tamil Nadu 2,626 and 1,224 in Telangana State. Interestingly, in many north Indian states, there have been no Swine flu cases or minimal in number. Assam, Bihar, Arunachal Pradesh, Chandigarh, Manipur, Meghalaya and Mizoram reported no cases.
