Downpour floods low-lying areas in Vizianagaram

Vizianagaram: Several low-lying areas in the city were on Thursday inundated with water following incessant rains. The colonies in the vicinity of streams witnessed flooding.

Flood water entered the ground floor of several apartments. The people in low-lying areas remained panic-stricken as some houses were submerged. The areas like Thotapalem,. KL Puram, Lanka veedhi, Jonna Guddi, Naidu colony, Vuda colony witnessed water stagnation.

The flood waters from Pedda Cheruvu gushed into Natraj colony, Padmavathi Nagar. Lower tank bund road, which connects RTC complex and fort, remains totally submerged in water.

District Collector M Hari Jawaharlal and MLA K Veerabhadraswamy visited all the flood-affected areas and supervised the restoration works. Municipal staff swung into action and deployed some excavators and cleared the channels for free flow of water. Flood waters entered into cellars of apartments and two-wheelers cars were submerged.

The Collector visited Gokapeta area and diected the municipal authorities to take steps to pump out water from the colonies. All the projects like Peddagedda, Vengalaraya sagar. Thota palli received heavy inflows.
