Kakinada: JNTUK Vice-Chancellor Prof M Ramalingaraju on Saturday urged the student community to start their participation in nation building activities through Swachh Bharat, Make in India and Digital India programmes.

Inaugurating the NSS programmes on the campus, Prof Ramalingaraju said Prime Minister Narendra Modi had given a call for active participation of the youth in different social welfare and economic development programmes.

As a first step, the students were asked to keep the university campus and its surroundings clean. The Vice-Chancellor said that Swachh Bharat programme will be undertaken every week in the university so that the students can continue the cleanliness campaign.

Students of the EE, ECE and Pharmacy departments participated in the programme organised by the NSS. University Registrar Prof V V Subbarao said the students should be actively involved in programmes such as Swachh Bharat and make significant contribution towards community development. While serving the community, students are advised to climb greater heights and fulfill their goals.

JNTUK's NSS unit will take part in the clean environment activities, said co-ordinator D K Venkat Reddy. The Swachh Bharat programme would be held every Saturday by the NSS, he said. "As part of this, we are conducting awareness seminars for students, banning the use of plastic in JNTUK campus, and converting plastic bottles into smaller pieces and re-using them in JNTUK," he said.

Saplings will be distributed to the people of the city so that they plant them and take care of them to achieve the overall objective of environmental protection. This campaign will be undertaken on October 2, Gandhi Jayanti.

The students did their bit in cleaning up the varsity premises, highways and cleared shrubs in the neighbourhood. Academic Director of Programme Planning (DAP) P Ratnam, teachers, NSS volunteers and students attended the programme.
