3 years on, drinking water pipeline works resume at Yakutpura

Yakutpura: The works on replacing the existing old CI trunk pipeline for drinking water supply with modern MS (Mild Steel) pipeline across the Yakutpura nala were taken up HMWSSB on Friday.

The Hans India took up the issue of over three-year delay in replacement of existing old pipeline with modern pipeline across the nala. Local corporator who took up the matter with Hyderabad MP, Asaduddin Owaisi, on several occasions, informed that the works were launched on Friday.

According to the report, 'Inordinate Delay – Upgradation of pipelines kept pending for 3 years' published in The Hans India, the existing CI trunk pipe was laid a few decades back, a few feet over the Yakutpura nala running parallel to the bridge. Whenever the nala overflows, the pipeline is submerged contaminating drinking water and also the flowing wastage gets struck on the pipeline and at its pillars thereby choking the nala.

Talabchanchalam division corporator Nasreen Sultana informed that the works of shifting pipeline were sanctioned by the authorities in September 2016 and an amount of Rs 22.35 lakh was also allocated. "Even though works were started, they remain pending ever since, as the HMWSSB area Manager appeared to be not interested in completing the works," he said.

Sultana said that the works were started on the next day of the report published and now the works were almost completed. She said that the new pipeline was laid and was also given a connection, but the old existing pipe was not removed by the contractor and the garbage was still stuck in the old pipe. It must be removed for free flowing of nala water, she added.

Abdul Rahman, a social activist, cast doubts on quality of the new pipe which has been kept there for more than a year old. "I welcome the progress, but the pipe is already covered in rust and I doubt the durability of the pipe which is now replaced without verifying its life," he noted.
