SC/ST Commission Chairman E Srinivas conducting Jan Adalat in Khammam on Friday

Khammam: Telangana State SC and ST Commission has emerged as a role model to SC and ST Commissions of other States, said its Chairman Errolla Srinivas. He held a review meeting with the officials of Khammam and Kothagudem districts in Khammam on Friday and urged them to make committed efforts to address the issues related to SCs and STs.

Srinivas said public's faith in the Commission has increased. 'Of the 12, 000 cases pending with the Commission, around 8,000 cases were resolved and Rs 55 crore compensation was paid. The Commission has launched its new initiative of 'Jan Adalat' in the erstwhile Khammam district and it is for the first time that the SC/ST Commission took up such an initiative to reach out to the concerned sections,' he informed.

Jan Adalats are meant to prevent atrocities against Dalits and tribals. Telangana SC/ST Commission has the powers of a Civil Court and serves to safeguards the interests of Scheduled Castes (SCs) and Scheduled Tribes (STs), he said. Hence, SCs and STs, who were subjected to injustice and victims of atrocities should approach the Commission confidently and get their grievances addressed. With the help of Jan Adalats, justice will be delivered at the doorstep of the affected persons, Srinivas said.

The SC and ST Commission Chairman said that Jan Adalats will be organised in all districts across the State in the days to come. He asked the officials to address issues related to SC/STs at district-level as it may be troublesome for them to reach the Commission in Hyderabad. During Jan Adalat held on Thursday and Friday, 500 applications/petitions received and nine were resolved.
