Delhi Riots Debate In Lok Sabha Today
New Delhi: The Lok Sabha is likely to witness a stormy re-commencement of proceedings on Wednesday, with the debate on Delhi riots scheduled to take place. Some of the opposition parties, including the Trinamool Congress, have once again served a notice for immediate discussion on the Delhi violence.
Speaker Om Birla had earlier postponed a debate on the matter to the post-Holi period, triggering protests from the opposition. The Congress and other parties had demanded an immediate discussion on the violence.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah is set to give his response at the end of the debate. The opposition parties led by the Congress have been demanding Amit Shah's resignation over multiple incidents of violence which rocked North East Delhi from the evening of February 23 to the early hours of 25th.
Noisy scenes were witnessed in both houses of the Parliament last week with continuous disruptions leading to repeated adjournments of both Rajya Sabha and Lok Sabha. The opposition had been pressing for an urgent debate on the Delhi riots.
53 people were killed and over 200 injured in violent incidents which erupted in North East Delhi in late February. Police detained close to 900 people and filed more than 300 cases in connection with the violence.
Delhi Police formed two Special Investigation Teams (SITs) to probe incidents of rioting in the national capital.
