Vijayawada: The activists of the CPM staged a protest at Vijayawada Municipal Corporation office here on Thursday demanding regularisation of house sites and allotment of houses to the poor.  CPM state secretary P Madhu said that their agitations would continue till the government resolves the problem.

He said that the government should make an announcement in this regard by June 20 otherwise they would intensify the agitation. The government started a housing scheme for the construction of 1.40 lakh houses to poorer sections almost 11 years ago but still it remained a dream, he said.

He expressed concern over increasing rents in the city following the development after bifurcation of the state and Amaravati capital city construction. He said the poor are not in a position to bear the rent burden.

He also recalled that the Telugu Desam promised on the regularisation of house pattas for canal bund residents and hill area people. But the government did not complete the promise even after completing four years of the tenure, he said.

CPM state committee member Ch Babu Rao asked the government to recall the promise towards houses construction to the poor during the elections. He wondered as to how the government was removing the houses of poorer sections from canal bunds against its election promise.

He said that the government was making plans to shift the residents of canal bunds in the name of beautification works. He said that the CPM would fight for protecting the interests of poorer sections. CPM leaders K Sridevi, DV Krishna, D Vishnuvardhan, B Nageshwara Rao, Nagoti Prasad, Adilakshmi and several leaders were present.
