VNRVJIET runner-up at Smart India Hackathon

Hyderabad: A team of students of III year CSE at VNR Vignana Jyothi Institute of Engineering and Technology has evolved as the 1st Runner Up in Smart India Hackathon 2018. The competition involved 41 teams around the country competing to provide solutions to traffic related problems in different states of India. 

Team InTraMS — comprising Harshavardhan Pendyala, Madapathi Vaisrav, Mohammed Arshaque, Devarapally Sowmya Reddy, Narala Akhil Reddy, Mamidala Mahesh — stood as winners for the problem statement presented by the Government of Telangana State, to create an Intelligent Traffic Management System.

Named "Traficolus",the proposed solution was to manage traffic signalling through computer vision by monitoring the lane occupancy real-time. All 41 teams working on similar problems were given a time of 31 hours for provide solutions that they proposed during the first phase of the competition. 12 teams were shortlisted after three interim judgements at the grand finale, and a comprehensive judgement chose three winners, who were presented cash prizes of `1 lakh, `75,000, and `50,000 respectively and three teams won a token of appreciation each worth `10,000. 

Yeshwanthrao Chavan College of Engineering at Nagpur served as the nodal centre for this 36-hour hackathon. The students mentioned that they used Python, Open CV, Chaos, Firebase, HTML & Javascript, Bootstrap and Raspberry Pi comprised of the technology stack for the project. 

The students expressed their eagerness to implement the solution for Government of Telangana State to see how it may alleviate the traffic problems that virtually everyone faces in a busy city like Hyderabad. The Institute’s faculty member Dr. Chakravarthula Kiran informed that another team of II year students from various disciplines of engineering has also been shortlisted for a different problem statement and is waiting to participate in the subsequent rounds.
