Officials indifferent to spread of hyacinth in three tanks

Update: 2018-08-27 05:30 IST

Malkajgiri: Officials continue to adopt a negligent attitude regarding growth of hyacinth in three tanks in this circle despite the complaints by the Opposition parties. As a result, pollution is prevailing in the Neredmet and R K Puram tanks, with foam emerging. Hyacinth covers 85 per cent of R K Puram tank.  Local residents while expressing anguish over the growth of ‘gurrapu dekka’, as hyacinth is known locally, complained  to The Hans India that officials have failed to remove it from the water bodies. The other tank to suffer is Safilguda.

According to them, people of Bank Colony, Anthayya Colony and R K Puram, are facing mosquito menace because of the failure of officials to clear hyacinth from the tanks, despite the residents’ complaints to local MLA and corporator. They point out that water in R K Puram tank has become totally polluted because of dumping of garbage and diversion of drainage/sewage, giving rise to mosquito menace and foul smell. Local people simply can’t stand the bad odour!.

According to the residents, the Safilguda park and the tank have become centres of pollution and stink because of dumping of plastic waste. These developments are causing severe inconvenience to the morning walkers, laughing club members and local residents. They grumbled to THI that their repeated complaints to GHMC officials have fallen on deaf ears. The officials try to wash off their hands contending that, as the area is not in their limits, the problem should be taken to the notice of HMDA, a local resident Anand said, while expressing anguish.

Residents of nearby colony Shankar, Anand, Ravi Yadav, Prasanna told THI that even in the case of the Banda Cheruvu garbage and hyacinth have only been partially removed. As a result, they have to put up with stinking surroundings. They complain that official indifference has forced them to stop complaining to the administration. They demand immediate removal of hyacinth from the Banda Cheruvu and the polluted water from the Safilguda Tank.
