Overflowing drainage raise stink in Laxma Reddy’s constituency

Mahbubnagar: With little rains, the drains and nalas in housing board colony of Jadcherla mandal of Mahbubnagar district have been overflowing since past two days putting the residents and dwellers of the colony in a precarious situation.

Jadcherla, being the headquarters constituency of Health Minister Dr C. Laxma Reddy who is the local MLA has done little for mitigating the drainage problems prevailing since past over two decades. Particularly the area of housing board, New Bus Stand and Vijayanagar Colonies are regularly bogged up with overflowing drainage problems.

The situation has gone from bad to worse during this rainy season. Even though the residents registered a complaint with the municipal officials of Jadcherla Gram Panchyath office, the authorities tend to do only temporary works for time being and leave the major problem of drain blockage unsolved.

Because of this, the problems which was considered minor a few years ago has become a major issue, as the drain water is overflowing from the manholes everywhere and entering the houses contaminating the drinking water lines causing grave health hazard.

“Recent rains have created havoc in our colony. Particularly the low lying areas are regularly inundated with drain water, which is left to stagnate for days together causing stinking smell and turned into breeding grounds for mosquitoes. Our repeated request with the gram panchayati officials has fallen on deaf ears as no one is ready to heed our problems,” said KS Moses, a resident of Housing Board Colony.

In fact, the Housing Board Colony was constructed way back in 1995, when Jadcherla had a population of just 40 to 60,000. But now the population of the town has increased to 1.80 lakh during the past 25 years. The numbers of houses have also gone up from 450 to about 1000 and the internal drainage which was constructed way back with small diameter is not able to withstand the growing pressure of drainage flow of the present day.
