Kothaguda: Locals turn vigilantes to save Mundikunta Lake

Kothaguda: The Mundikunta Lake which was once a freshwater lake with a Full Tank Level extent of about 10 acres has now been reduced to sewage slush of around 2 acres.

With polluted water, floating chunks of discarded package materials and half-burnt garbage are spotted on the shores which stop the waterfowls from visiting the lake.

The locals alleged that the GHMC has diverted the sewage system from nearby colonies into the lake through storm water drains is the reason for the sorry state of affairs.

The residents of colonies in and around the lake are pooling money not only to protect the lake from land sharks but also to save the water body from being reduced to open drains and garbage dumps and bring back the lake to its lost glory.

Speaking to The Hans India, Pradeep Gadicherla who stays at Aparna Towers said, "This is an issue that has been raging for the past seven years and after submitting many representations and alerting the GHMC officials about the risk of encroachment if not cleaned, not a single official visited the area."

The locals aim to divert the storm drain from the lake and reclaim the lakebed and deepen it for freshwater storage.
