Vijayawada: Home minister Mekathoti Sucharita said the government would enact new laws for the protection of women and girls in the state. She suggested that the girls and women be very cautious with unknown persons and don't respond to the missed calls given by unknown persons and not open the links they received on smart phone.

The home minister launched mobile app Be Safe for the convenience of women and girls at a programme organised by city police on 'Women Safety in Cyberspace' at a function hall here on Tuesday. Police officials, representatives of NGOs and a large number of girl students attended the event.

Speaking on the occasion, Sucharita said the police department was always ready to help the women and girls. She said some phone numbers like 100, 112 and 181 and others were already in use to help the people in distress and in emergency situations.

She said the new app Be Safe can be downloaded on a smart phone easily and could be used to get emergency help from the police. She said spy apps were secretly installed on the mobile phones when the customers give the phones for repair.

"The spyware thus installed is very dangerous and it can be used to steal the data of the phone users," she said and suggested that students develop awareness and learn how to respond spontaneously to face the problems.

Women and child welfare minister Taneti Vanitha said women were the biggest victims of cybercrimes. Stating that cybercriminals target the working women and young students, she cautioned them not fall prey to the criminals. She said the criminals try to strike a friendship with the girls and asked them not to get trapped.

Vanitha told the students to respect the parents and follow their suggestions to avoid problems. Referring to Disha incident in Hyderabad, she felt it was a premeditated crime. She said the life of students depend on their decisions and actions. Commissioner of police Dwaraka Tirumala Rao and others spoke on the occasion.
