Karimnagar: Youth told to protect women, their rights at Satavahana University

Karimnagar: The youth must give protection to women and their rights, said a Registrar Prof U Umesh Kumar here on Saturday. An awareness programme about the 'Protection of women' was organised under NSS unit of university in association with Sakhi centre.

Attending as a chief guest, Prof Umesh Kumar appealed to the girl students of the university to strive hard first for their rights and freedom and later to achieve women empowerment. They must be aware of their problems and must strive hard for the development of society, he added.

District Revenue Officer Praveenya who attended the programme as a special invitee said that the youth of present generation must inculcate the culture of respecting women. They must understand that when a girl or a women say yes means yes and when they say no means no instead of taking different meaning from their words.

Specially the youth must must fight against the violence and harassment against women and girls and must be first to lodge the complaint if they come across such of kind of incidents to the police to help them and save their lives, he suggested.

K Sathyavathi, the director of the Bhumika Stree Welfare Society, Hyderabad speaking on the occasion said that there is 181 helpline number that the women and girl students must utilise by lodging complain against the violence and harassment on women and to share their issues to get help from the concern authorities immediately.

The head of the Sociology Department, Prof Surepalli Sujata said that such kind of awareness programmes must be conducted regularly among the girls students and various sections of women along with involving the youth of present generation.

Later, a pledge for protection of women and their rights was administered to those attended the programme. The Sakhi Centre incharge Lakshmi, NCC coordinator Dr D Harikanth, Science College principal Dr Sirasija, Commerce College principal Dr E Manohar, NSS officer D Vijay Prakash and PO Vijay Kumar and others were present.
