Unhygienic conditions at govt girls college

Secunderabad: Unclean surroundings and foul smell emanating from the waste left over on the premises of Government Junior College for Girls at West Maredpally have been causing severe convenience to the students as well as staff working in the college. A girls' primary and high schools are also run from the same premises. The college also runs special coaching centres for various purposes.

It is learnt that the principal of the college has allowed the premises to be used for conducting private functions and marriages. After the functions, organiers often fail to clean the surroundings and leave behind trash, which includes liquor bottles and food leftovers in premises. Students and staff have complained of unbearable stench due to the leftover waste.

Head mistress of the school K Gita and other teachers lamented that unbearable stench and waste was making life difficult at the college. Despite several complaints to Cantonment Board officials, the waste was not cleared from the college premises, they lamented.

Locals who spoke to THI said that local leaders come to the college principal Sridevi seeking permission to conduct private functions. They also bring recommendation from Minister Talasani Srinivas Yadav, who stays nearby. When THI contacted the college principal, she said she allowed to private programme on the occasion of Bonalu festival based on the request of local leaders, but some artistes who came from other areas created mess on the premises.

She said she would ensure that the watchman and other staff would clear clean the surroundings. She alleged that her request to organisers not to celebrate on the premises as monthly unit tests were being held went unheeded. Parents, students, locals and staff appealed to Cantonment Board, education department and public representatives not to allow the college premises to be given for conducting private functions in future.
