Delhi Violence: SC Directs HC To Take up Riot Victims' Pleas On Friday
New Delhi: The Supreme Court of India on Wednesday, directed the Chief Justice of the Delhi High Court to club the cases related to the Delhi violence and filing of FIRs against those who made inflammatory speeches and hear them on Friday, according to media reports.
The apex court was hearing petitions filed by Delhi riot victims and activist Harsh Mander. The Solicitor-General of India told the court that 100 complaints have been filed from both sides with regard to hate speeches and that no FIR has been filed in this connection.
The apex Court made it clear that Harsh Mander would not be heard today, according to media reports. Solicitor-General of India Tushar Mehta is reported to have submitted transcripts of Harsh Mander's alleged speech in which he said to have stated that there is no trust left in courts and that justice will be delivered on the streets.
The apex court sought a clarification from the activist's lawyer before it heard him further, media reports stated. SG Tushar Mehta also reportedly agreed to file an affidavit with regard to Harsh Mander's alleged hate speech. Clips of the speech allegedly made by the activist, went viral on social media platforms. The Supreme Court is scheduled to hear the matter related to Harsh Mander's alleged inciteful speech on Friday.
Harsh Mander and other activists had also approached the Delhi High Court with a similar plea. The HC had deferred hearing in the case to April 30, with the Solicitor-General of India arguing that the prevailing atmosphere was not conducive to filing cases at this stage. The Supreme Court today, is reported to have observed that the matter should be heard expeditiously and gave directions to the Delhi High Court in the matter.
