Women deprived of opportunities: AU VC
Visakhapatnam: Vice-Chancellor of Andhra University G Nageswara Rao highlighted women’s participation in various fields in small scale sector as entrepreneurs. The Vice-Chancellor inaugurated a national seminar on ‘Women and technology’ on Saturday organised by Dr Durgabai Deshmukh Centre for Women’s Studies of Andhra University.
Principal of College of Arts and Commerce Prof K Rammohan Rao opined that women are not given enough opportunities to prove their talent. Rammohan Rao said that still due to gender bias, many women are missing opportunities.
Director of Women Studies Centre Prof S Sumitra explained about the importance of the seminar. The seminar focused on ‘women and opportunities’, ‘women and safety issues’, ‘women and health issues’ and ‘technology to empower women’.
Rector of Andhra University Prof K Gayathri Devi and Prof K Nirupa Rani also spoke. Alcoholism-the intervention of NGOs for well-being of the families by Dr P Usha, problems of women workers in petrol bunks-a case study of Visakhapatnam city by T Sambasiva Rao, health status of women in AP, gender difference and effect on university students by Dr K Mary Sujatha were presented in the seminar. On the occasion, the Vice-Chancellor released the first issue of ‘FOCUS’, the quarterly issue of the Centre for Women Studies.
