Uniform registration numbers for AP vehicles

Update: 2018-11-01 05:30 IST

Vijayawada: Henceforth, all vehicles in Andhra Pradesh will have AP39 as prefix in their registration numbers. The number will be uniform for all the 13 districts in the state. Till now, each district has its own code.

Transport Minister K Atchannaidu told mediapersons at the Secretariat on Wednesday that the new system will come into force within 15 days. So far, the vehicles are being registered with codes up to AP38.

The new numbering is an answer to the allegations that the people are getting their vehicles registered with wrong addresses in other districts due to different code numbers.

RTC buses would be given Z series, police department P series and other government vehicles would be given T,U,V,W,X,Y. But the code number would remain AP39.

Transport Commissioner N Bala Subrahmanyam said the revenue from the sale of fancy numbers was Rs 2.98 crore last year and it would surely increase this year with the introduction of new code.
