Student police cadet programme launched in Prakasam district
Ongole: The Prakasam district police launched the student police cadet programme here on Wednesday as per the directive of the Ministry of Home and Bureau of Police Research and Development. District Collector Vadarevu Vinaychand and SP Bhusarapu Satya Yesubabu handed over the kits to schools and launched the programme officially in the district.
The programme is aimed at training high school students to respect the law, practice discipline and civic sense and develop empathy for vulnerable sections of society. It also strengthens the cadet’s commitment towards family, community and the environment, enabling them to resist negative tendencies such as substance abuse, deviant behaviour, intolerance and other social evils.
The programme is first launched in 127 schools in Kerala in 2010 by the then GDP Jacob Punnoose. As the programme had evoked good response, the Ministry of Home Affairs and BPRD directed all the states to implement the same in their schools.
The BPRD has prepared syllabus in road safety and traffic awareness, crime prevention and control, fight against social evils, empathy and sympathy, community development, cleanliness, team spirit, safety of women and children, discipline, ethics and values, fight against corruption, disaster management and environmental protection and social harmony.
SP Yesubabu said, “The Central government ordered the states to implement the programme in 10 schools of each district initially and sanctioned Rs 1.15 lakh budget to provide infrastructure and material to each of it. The students from Classes VIII and IX will be taken into programme as per their interest and they will be trained for two years, conducting indoor and outdoor activities one-hour every week and field trips.
The voluntary trainers from police, forest, fire, women and child welfare and education departments would train the 1,728 cadets registered for SPC programme in the district.”
Collector Vinaychand said, “The police play an important role in keeping the law and order in society. These cadets will get to know the daily life of police working with them and become change agents of society. The programme will also help them in future for higher education and employment opportunities.”
