Nellore: Many schools in rural areas lack even basic amenities like buildings, furniture, toilets and other infrastructure resulting in child friendly environs is far from reality. Now, philanthropists and charity organisations are sprucing up such government-run schools in the district. Rotary Club, as part of TEACH programme, is providing facilities in the district by implementing ‘Happy School’ where compound walls, white wash/paint, play material, drinking water, toilets and others are being provided.

Rotary India Literacy Mission had developed 9 parameters for identifying a school for improvement of a primary or elementary or secondary school that are state-funded or a Municipal/Zilla Parishad school that lack at least five of the nine parameters (facilities) mentioned. “We have completed two schools in Tada and Sullurpeta mandals and also one school in Musunuru in Kavali mandal this year.

Total 40 schools have been proposed in Nellore, Kadapa, Anantapur and Kurnool districts and 60 in various districts in Karnataka for development. Each school requires Rs 5-9 lakh for overall development and there are plans for 11 schools in Nellore district,” said Dr K Madhava Reddy, Chairman of the District Happy School Programme.

As per guidelines of the Rotary Club, they paint schools, renovate school building, construct separate toilets for boys and girls, hand washing facilities, clean and adequate drinking water for both students and teachers, library, play material, games and sports equipment, benches, desks for students, space for teaching staff, and provide shoes and school bags for students.

“Rotary people have painted our school, provided RO plant, renovated toilets, provided benches and desks for convenient seating for the students, and a philanthropist Balu Mohan from Chennai also distributed bags to the schoolchildren. Now, we are having good learning environs for the children in the school,” said VV Kameswara Rao, Headmaster of the Mandal Parishad Upper Primary School, Ramapuram in Tada mandal. Further, Rotary representative Madhava Reddy added that activities are being taken up in phased manner and searching for donors for supporting additional needs of the schools as part of school adoption programme. He added that works in many schools are under progress.
