Motorists without licences cautioned
Nellore: Mayor Abdul Aziz has expressed concern over motorists driving vehicles without licences in the city.
He attended an LLR Mela at Red Cross Building here on Saturday and said out of 4 lakh two wheelers in the city only 1.7 lakh vehicle owners were having licences.
He further said only 75,000 car owners are having licences out of 1.25 lakh in the city.
He asked officials of the Transport Department to take stringent action against motorists, who are driving vehicles without licences.
On the occasion, the Mayor handed over LLR certificates to the eligible during the mela.
He said the situation arises due to inordinate delay at the offices where applicants have to follow cumbersome procedures for obtaining a licence and also inadequate number of offices in the district.
He said the families would face miserable situation if anything happens to such people as insurance companies deny compensation in case of any untoward incidents occurs.
Aziz appreciated efforts of the Transport Department for organising melas in various places for issuing LLRs at their doorstep.
They had issued 30,000 licences in 160 major panchayats during the melas, he said.
The Mayor also said that people, who got licences during these melas, are being educated on safety precautions, knowledge on signs and other essentials for driving.
The Transport Department and Nellore District Two-Wheeler Mechanics Association have jointly organised the Mela in the city in which Deputy Transport Commissioner Sivaram Prasad, TDP leaders Nanne Saheb, Rajanaidu, association members Badruddin and others were present.
