Warm gesture by GHMC Commissioner Dana Kishore to homeless in Bajara Hills
Hyderabad: With an intention to provide shield from cold, the Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) carried out blanket distribution drive on Wednesday night. GHMC Commissioner Dana Kishore distributed blankets to the needy at Basava Tarakam Cancer Hospital in Bajara Hills. Additional Commissioner Harichandana, Zonal Commissioner Mushraf Ali were also present. The bone-chilling weather has thrown the citizens out of gear. When citizens are wrapped in winter gear, there are street dwellers who cannot afford a blanket and live a miserable life.
There are people living in the open in different areas of twin cities. They sleep on footpaths during nights. So many attendants of patients also rest outside the hospitals and some people take shelter at bus stops. The GHMC is shifting all these people to the night shelters. GHMC officials distributed blankets to the street dwellers on Wednesday night. Speaking on the occasion, the commissioner said the GHMC set up 15 night shelters to shield the homeless. As many as 700 people are being taken care of in these centres. GHMC is identifying the people who are sleeping at main junctions and footpaths and shifting them to these shelters, community halls and model markets. According to the commissioner, thousands of people from different states arrive daily on for various reasons. Most of them are the employment seekers. GHMC is identifying such people and shifting them to the shelters.
“There are separate shelters for men and women. Construction of three shelters was completed out of the seven, which commenced recently with a budget of Rs 9.71 crore. Shelters at Maternity Hospital in King Kothi, Mahaveer Hospital in Masab Tank, Niloufer Hospital are functioning now. Shelters at ENT and Osmania Hospital are in progress,” Dana Kishore said. As many as 3000 blankets were distributed to the helpless and poor people by the GHMC on Wednesday.
Zonal Commissioner Harichandana distributed to the street dweller in the stretch of Shilparamam to Kothaguda in Serilingampally zone. Secunderabad Zonal Commissioner CN Raghu Prasad supervised the distribution of the blankets to the needy at Alwal, RTC Cross Roads, Vidyanagar, Railway Station. Zonal Commissioner of LB Nagar Musharaf Ali organised the distribution drive at Basava Tarakam, Niloufer Hospital where as the drive was carried out at Kukatpalli under the supervision of zonal commissioner of Charimanar Shankaraiah. The drive was also conducted in Aramghar, Attapur, Malakpet, Chandrayanagutta by the zonal commissioner of Charminar.
